Bus route and stops in the city center as of fall 2021

All information at a glance

The refurbishment of the inner-city section of the U3 is right on schedule. On the project side, the plan was to move all buses from Steinstrasse back to Mönckebergstrasse at the end of August. However, in the course of the "Action Concept Inner City" of the Authority for Transport and Mobility Change (BVM) and the Authority for Urban Development and Housing (BSW), traffic in the inner city is being rethought, among other things.

In order to make the best possible use of the opportunities offered by the current bus route and at the same time mitigate the negative effects, we are implementing interim solutions on September 1 and probably November 24 that will

  • provide noticeable relief for Steinstrasse and Speersort,
  • but still offer the advantages (well-functioning bus, bicycle and individual traffic, better access to the Kontorhausviertel district) and
  • relieve Mönckebergstrasse of bus traffic while still providing good access to restaurants and retail outlets.

  • The current routing will remain in place for the time being, but the Speersort (area in front of the St. Petri daycare center) will be relieved: in the future, lines 6, 16, 17 and 37 will be routed straight ahead from Steinstraße through Domstraße to Willy-Brandt-Straße (or line 6 from Steinstraße via "Alter Fischmarkt" with its own stops there, continuing in the direction of Speicherstadt). For this purpose, the LSBG will set up three temporary stops in Domstraße as of September 1 (with construction work starting on August 9): in the westbound direction opposite the existing Speersort (Mö) stop and in the westbound and eastbound directions between Große Reichenstraße and Willy-Brandt-Straße.
  • At the same time, due to the barrier-free expansion of the Rathaus subway stop and the associated one-way street regulation at Rathausmarkt and in Rathausstraße, bus lines 3, X35 and 31 must be rerouted in the direction of Hauptbahnhof: from Gr. Burstah via Neß, Börsenbrücke, Große Reichenstraße to Domstraße and into Steinstraße. These lines will then serve the Speersort (Mö) stop in Domstraße as well - instead of Speesort in front of St. Petri.
  • In addition, the central night service connection (night bus stops) is relocated to Speersort/ Domstraße/ Schmiedestraße during this time (except for line 601). The occasional buses of line 3 ending at "Rathaus" (stop at the west portal of Petrikirche or Rathausstraße) will then end at Domplatz and temporarily run through Kattrepel and Schopenstehl (Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 20:16 approximately every 10 minutes). Orientation maps at the bus stops will provide information about the departure stops of the night buses.

Background information on this phase

  • Until now, there has been too little space in Domstraße at Speersort to set up a bus stop of sufficient length for all the lines that have been running there up to now. In order to be able to reduce the number of buses by splitting up the bus routes, the LSBG is building temporary bus stops further along Domstraße. This will make it possible to build a shorter bus stop located on Domstrasse (at the Speersort level).
  • The relocation of bus lines from Steinstraße back to Mönckebergstraße is not yet possible again, since
    • extensive adjustments (including the traffic light circuits) are necessary at the Mönckebergstraße/Steintorwall intersection: The intersection is currently optimized to allow bus traffic from Steintorwall to turn smoothly right onto Steintorbrücke and vice versa. For the next phase, however, the connection between Steintorbrücke and Mönckebergstraße must also function again in terms of traffic. The planned completion date for the work is November 24.
    • a bus stop will be built on Steintorbrücke. This will also provide access to new stairways from the railroad tracks onto the Steintorbrücke, which Deutsche Bahn is currently building there.
  • During this time, Mönckebergstrasse will remain fully closed in the construction area. HOCHBAHN will use this for the barrier-free expansion of the Mönckebergstraße U3 stop.

Bus traffic will be divided up

  • Lines 3, 5, 19 and all night bus lines (600) will operate in Mönckebergstraße during this time, and will also stop at Rathausmarkt again. In the construction site area for the barrier-free extension of the U3 stop Mönckebergstraße, block traffic will be in effect again.
  • Lines 6, 16, 17, X35, 31, 37 will remain in Steinstrasse, which means that the number of buses will be almost halved, resulting in a noticeable reduction in traffic on Steinstrasse (also at night): Together with Line 3 returning from Ballindamm, 33 trips per direction return to Mönckebergstraße in the peak hour, 35 remain in Steinstraße. On weekdays, no more buses run in Steinstraße at night between about 0:30 and 4:30 a.m., and on weekend nights Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun, only line 17 runs here (instead of the previous 5 and 17).
  • At Speersort in the area of the daycare center, only the lines X35 and 31 are still running (they pass through without stopping). The stop temporarily installed there can be removed. Previously, this is not possible due to the lines 5, 19 and the night bus lines still running there.

Background information on this phase

  • The Mönckebergstrasse/Steintorwall intersection will be ready for smooth inner-city bus operations via Mönckebergstrasse and Steinstrasse from around November 24. The eastbound bus stop on the Steintor bridge will also be completed by then.
  • Criteria for the division of routes between Steinstrasse and Mönckebergstrasse:
    • Eastbound: lines that share a common route further on should be reached at the same stop (e.g. 6,17, 37 or 5, 19).
    • Westbound: Passengers should be able to reach their lines in the same direction at the same stop (e.g. 16, 17, 37 towards St. Pauli, 5, 19 to Jungfernstieg and Dammtor).
    • In addition, the Mönckebergstraße/Bergstraße intersection will receive clearer traffic routing. For the X35 and the 31, the best possible stop will be realized at Rödingsmarkt. For Line 3, service to the main station will be restored as quickly as possible.

And from spring 2022?

What happens next spring depends on the "action concept for the city center". BVM and BSW are conducting a comprehensive evaluation, including surveys of HVV customers, residents, tradespeople, passers-by and cyclists.

All evaluation results are to be available in spring 2022 and - in addition to the experience gained from bus operation - will be incorporated into the decision on the final bus and traffic routing. Good accessibility to the city center by public transport is a high priority.
