With its “master plan for the metro system”, HOCHBAHN wants to advance the development and optimisation of the metro system based on its stipulated goals of its public transport service and using the possibilities offered by fully automated operations.

Expanding the metro network for the future

Why is it necessary to expand the metro network?
Hamburg is a growing city. The population is on the rise, new homes are being built, and new jobs created. More and more people are using bus and rail services. Passenger numbers are constantly increasing. Today and in the future, Hamburg needs an attractive and high-performance public transport system to take the pressure off the roads, protect the environment and in this way to ensure that the city keeps a high quality of life.

How far has planning progressed?
The areas in need of a public transport connection were analysed in a so-called concept study carried out in 2014. Based on this, the Senate of Hamburg commissioned HOCHBAHN to do the corresponding feasibility studies. These feasibility studies show the basic transportation, operational, technical and economic feasibility of running services on these route segments. They were completed for the first construction stage of the future metro line U5 and the extension of the metro line U4 in spring of 2016.

Using innovative methods the HOCHBAHN is currently involving the citizens of Hamburg in the planning process. The inhabitants thereby enhance the expertise of planners and engineers with the knowledge of the local circumstances thus helping to make the right decisions.

Metro line U4 extension out to the bridges over the river Elbe: clearing the way for Europe's biggest urban development project

The HafenCity is Europe‘s biggest urban development project inside existing city boundaries! The district directly beside the river Elbe with the Elbphilharmonie as flagship is not only a magnet for tourists but also a home to many people. And what is more: new homes, offices and parks are already being added in its eastern part. That is why HOCHBAHN is also extending the line U4 as far as the new station Elbbrücken being built there.

The first metro services are planned to run here in the winter timetable 2018, getting up to 18,000 passengers a day where they want to go. The shell construction for the station is already erected, and the laying of the track for the 1.3 kilometre long section from the station HafenCity University began in September 2016.

Extension of the metro line U4 to Horner Geest

An eastward extension is also planned to the metro line U4. The feasibility study for the new construction of the section as far as Horner Geest has been completed since the end of 2015. 40,000 people live in the district of Horn alone, and these will be given access to the rapid transit system with the line U4.

Construction of the new metro line U5

Metro line U5 Eastern section: Bramfeld - City Nord

As part of the planning process for the Eastern section U5 East (Bramfeld – City Nord), the feasibility study has already been completed.

The districts of Bramfeld, Steilshoop and Barmbek-Nord will have a connection to the metro system via the first partial section of the metro line U5. This will add important locations such as Fuhlsbüttler Straße and City Nord to the catchment area. In City Nord alone there are some 300 companies which employ something like 30,000 people.
