The metro system

HOCHBAHN provides transport routes throughout the city of Hamburg – with four metro lines, 93 stops and over 100 kilometres of track in total. It all started with the opening of the 17-kilometre circular ring (now the U3 line) back in 1912. Since then, we have been driving Hamburg forward – with ongoing expansions to our network. Over the years to come, the U4 line will be extended and Hamburg will benefit from a completely new metro connection with the construction of the U5 line.
One characteristic feature of HOCHBAHN is the fact that large sections of its network are above ground. No less than 60 kilometres of track runs along dams and viaducts, while just 44 kilometres operates along underground tunnels. The metro also runs entirely on its own train line system, so it is not affected by other rail or road traffic. For our passengers this means: no traffic jams and no stress.
80 percent of our metro stations are already fitted with elevators, making them fully accessible to wheelchair users and people with pushchairs. We are constantly working on making more metro stations barrier-free.

Our vehicles

Developed exclusively for Hamburg, the DT5 is the latest generation of metro train designed to offer maximum passenger comfort. This specific model has been running in the Hanseatic city since 2012 and brings the benefits of its smooth operation and low noise levels, as well as its heated and air-conditioned carriages. The DT5 trains are also particularly environmentally friendly.
The previous generation, the DT4s, also operate on the Hamburg network and have been “spruced up” with new interior fittings. The DT3s, which have also become known as “Silberlings”, were built up until 1971 and reliably transport our customers around the city.
