This section of the U3 is one of the most important connections in the city centre. A high level of reliability and safety of the transport infrastructure is indispensable for mobility in our city. That is why we must address the extensive work needed on this historic and heavily used stretch of track in good time. Unfortunately, this is not possible without closing the line for a considerable time. For this reason, services on the U3 will be interrupted as follows:

  • Thursday 28 January 2021, 9 pm to close of services: Closure of the U3 between St. Pauli and Berliner Tor

  • Friday 29 January till Sunday 31 January 2021: Closure of the U3 between St. Pauli and Hbf Süd

  • 1 February 2021 till 27 March 2022: Closure of the U3 between Hauptbahnhof (Süd) and Baumwall. The stations at Mönckebergstraße, Rathaus and Rödingsmarkt will not be served during this period.

  • The U3 resumes services along the entire route again. Trains will only run through Mönckebergstraße station without stopping for at least a further four weeks. How long will actually be needed can only be decided when the building work is carried out (the reason: a completely new technical room will be installed, and trains cannot stop at the station before this is operating.)

Many good alternatives

There are many alternative options to travel into the Hamburg city centre and to get where you want to go there during the closure of the U3 between Hauptbahnhof (Süd) and Baumwall up to March 2022:

  • U- and S-Bahn stations Jungfernstieg (U1 and U2/U4 – as well as S1, S2 and S3), Hauptbahnhof (all U- and S-Bahn lines, Steinstraße (U1), Meßberg (U1), Stadthausbrücke (S1, S2 and S3).
  • A reliable bus service is guaranteed with many lines which will continue to run at the present high frequency.
Please take note that from March 2021 till September 2021 most of the bus lines which otherwise ran along Mönckebergstraße will be redirected via Steinstraße, directly parallel. Further information below.
  • Our recommendation between U/S Landungsbrücken and Hauptbahnhof: use the S-Bahn and bus line No. 2 (the route has been extended as of 13.12.2020). This runs with articulated buses every 10 minutes between Altona and Berliner Tor with stops at Landungsbrücken, Speicherstadt, Deichtorplatz, Hauptbahnhof and Berliner Tor.
  • Our recommendation between U St. Pauli and the city centre: Bus lines 16 (new!), 17 and 112.

A 100 metre section of Mönckebergstraße will be completely closed off (the construction site next to the Levantehaus) and bus services will be redirected via Steinstraße from March to September 2021:
All the bus lines which otherwise run along Mönckebergstraße will be redirected via Stein-straße, directly parallel. Bus No. 3 will run via Ballindamm.
The bus stops at Mönckebergstraße/Hbf and Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz will not be served during this period. They will be replaced by temporary bus stops at Speersort, Domplatz, Jacobikirche and on a traffic island in the section Mohlenhofstraße-Finanzamt.
These have been chosen to give exit points from which Mönckebergstraße can be easily reached while at the same time providing good access to the historic warehouse quarter (Kontorhausviertel).
