Climate change affects us all. It is one of the most critical global risks of our time. Yet we all have a key lever for reducing CO₂ emissions and achieving the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement: urban mobility. HOCHBAHN is fully aware of this responsibility towards the city.

In 2024, 29 per cent of Hamburg’s carbon footprint was attributable to transport.

As Hamburg’s largest public transport operator, we at HOCHBAHN also have a duty to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2024, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg adopted targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for developing climate protection strategies for its public enterprises. HOCHBAHN aligns its climate protection strategy with these targets and with the climate objectives of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Emissions over which we have direct control

In accordance with the city’s targets, group-wide greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption and fugitive gas losses (Scope 1 and 2) are to be reduced by at least 50 per cent by 2030 and by at least 90 per cent by 2040, compared with the base year of 2024.

HOCHBAHN has been measuring its Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2019 and has already achieved significant reductions through targeted measures.
