Hamburg is growing. More and more people are moving to the city to live and work. By the mid-2030s, Hamburg is expected to have a population of around two million people. More residents also brings with it more mobility – but within exactly the same amount of space. Long traffic jams are already part of everyday life here. To ensure that everyone can continue to get to their destination quickly, comfortably, and in an eco-friendly and safe way, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks therefore need to be expanded.
HOCHBAHN is undertaking a significant expansion of its U-Bahn network to make sure that the mobility transition succeeds and people will be able to travel around the city quicker. More than 150,000 residents will get to enjoy the benefits of a new underground stop near their home, thanks to the construction of the U5, the extension of the U4 in two places, and the new U3 stop which will be called Fuhlsbüttler Straße.
HOCHBAHN is also actively involving the local population – with extensive public participation initiatives right from the planning stage through to construction. Ideas and suggestions are welcome at schneller-durch-hamburg.de, where people can help shape the future of mobility in the city.
