HOCHBAHN buses parked at the Alsterdorf bus depot

New bus depots

More electric buses require more space and infrastructure

After Alsterdorf, a new HOCHBAHN site is now taking shape in Meiendorf. Others are set to follow.

An efficient bus service needs a strong foundation. Today, over 1,100 buses are already in service for HOCHBAHN, and this number is set to rise. The number of electric vehicles is increasing. However, it is not only the proportion of alternative-fuel vehicles in our bus fleet that is growing – with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions during operation – but also the infrastructure that supports them.

To ensure this succeeds, we are gradually converting our existing bus depots to support electric mobility. At the same time, new sites are being developed. This is because e-buses require charging infrastructure, modern workshops and sufficient space to ensure smooth operations.

Alsterdorf Bus Depot and Meiendorf Site

Back in 2019, HOCHBAHN opened a bus depot in Alsterdorf designed specifically for the operation of vehicles with alternative powertrains. Both electric and diesel vehicles are currently in service there.

Another bus depot is currently under construction in Meiendorf, in north-east Hamburg. It is scheduled to come into operation in 2026. The site is designed for the operation of buses with alternative drive systems.

Plans include:

  • Charging and parking areas for around 130 electric buses
  • a wash bay
  • a workshop hall
  • an administration building

Resource-saving and greening measures at the new depot

Resource-saving measures are also a key focus in the operation of the new depot. The carport roofs will be greened, fitted with photovoltaic systems and used to collect rainwater. The collected water will be used in the washing facility and subsequently treated. Waste heat from the charging systems will be used to heat the site. In addition, the façades and noise barriers will be greened.

The buses are charged here using electricity from renewable sources. The result is a depot that meets functional requirements and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions during operation.
