The transformation of Hamburg’s streets is in full swing. HOCHBAHN is consistently upgrading its bus fleet and gradually phasing out fossil-fuelled vehicles. This is because one of our key projects is the electrification of bus transport. Since 2020, the majority of buses procured have been battery-powered. Today, over 400 electric buses are operating on Hamburg’s roads (as at the end of 2025) – out of a total fleet of around 1,100 vehicles. By 2031, we will have procured around 240 further battery-electric buses.

As early as 2018, the first production-ready electric bus was on the roads in Hamburg. Two years later, in what was then Germany’s largest ever tender for electric buses, we awarded the contract to the manufacturers Daimler Buses, Solaris and MAN Truck & Bus. Since 2021, we have also been taking delivery of battery-powered articulated buses, which offer correspondingly more space for our passengers.

The transition to alternative propulsion systems is therefore already clearly visible in everyday life in our city. At the same time, we are continuing to build and expand the infrastructure for our electric buses. This includes, in particular, the conversion of existing depots and the construction of new facilities designed entirely for electric bus operations.
